Horse Drawn Omnibus outside Fitzalan Market Hall, Fitzalan Square / High Street
Original caption on the Davys Restaurant menu card reads: - Not even a horse drawn tram...compare this Victorian scene at the bottom of High Street with todays bustle around Fitzalan Square. The Fitzalan fish and meat market, built in 1786 to replace a motley collection of stalls known as the Shambles, dominated the area until 1930 when the first part of the new Castle Market opened. Among the buildings in the picture is the Holbourn Restaurant and the fascinatingly titled straw-bonnet-mart. What a thrill it must have been to ride on the top deck of a four-horse bus to Broomhill

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Sheffield City Archives takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Fitzalan Square. The scene showcases a Horse Drawn Omnibus parked outside the iconic Fitzalan Market Hall, capturing a slice of Victorian life. The original caption on the Davys Restaurant menu card invites us to compare this historical snapshot with today's vibrant atmosphere around Fitzalan Square. It highlights how much has changed over the years, as modern-day hustle and bustle replace this serene Victorian setting. The Fitzalan fish and meat market, built in 1786 as a replacement for the Shambles' chaotic collection of stalls, stands prominently in the image. This grand structure dominated the area until 1930 when Castle Market began its reign. As we delve deeper into this photograph, our eyes are drawn to other notable buildings such as Holbourn Restaurant and an intriguingly named establishment called straw-bonnet-mart. These structures add character to an already charming cityscape. Imagining ourselves transported back in time, we can't help but feel a sense of thrill at envisioning what it must have been like riding atop a four-horse bus destined for Broomhill. This print is not just a glimpse into history; it serves as a reminder of how far transportation and urban landscapes have evolved since those bygone days.
