James Farrer began making and repairing buffs and glazers at 12 Turner Street Sheffield in 1866. He moved to a house with a shop attached at 57 Cambridge Street, moving to Cambridge Street in 1880 as the business continued to expand. After his death in 1894 his widow entered into a partnership with James E Farrer as James Farrer and Sons, later (1909) becoming a private limited company. By 1909 the firm has premises and workshops on each side of Burgess Street, in Wellington Street, and in Barkers Pool, besides timber stores in Balm Green.
