EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 20th century takes us back in time to Staniforth Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire. The bustling street scene showcases a glimpse of daily life in this vibrant city around 1910. Standing tall on the right side is No. 648 Appletons cash drug and Medical stores, an establishment that catered to the health needs of the local community. Next door, we find High Hazels Pharmacy at No. 646, offering its services to those seeking medical assistance. On the left side of the frame, we see No. 646 New Century Meat Co. , a butcher shop proudly displaying its name for all passersby to see. Adjacent to it stands No. 644 Hunters Ltd. , a tea store where residents could indulge in their favorite brews and perhaps purchase some delightful treats. The image captures not only these businesses but also provides a snapshot of everyday life during this era: people strolling along the road, horse-drawn carriages passing by, and buildings adorned with intricate architectural details. Preserved by Sheffield Libraries and now housed within Sheffield City Archives (p01615), this photograph offers us an invaluable window into history—a testament to how much has changed over time while reminding us of our shared heritage as inhabitants of this remarkable city in Yorkshire.
