EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of the Tontine Inn, located in Haymarket, Sheffield around 1820. Constructed in 1785, this magnificent establishment was arguably the largest public house in Sheffield during its time. With an impressive banqueting hall spanning over 12,000 square feet on its second floor, it truly stood out as a symbol of opulence and hospitality. The Tontine Inn boasted exceptional amenities such as stabling for up to 60 horses and even had its own brewery. Behind the hotel, charming cottages were built to accommodate footmen who served at this prestigious establishment. As one of the three main coach departure centers in Sheffield for routes all across England, alongside The Angel on Snig Hill and The Kings Head on Change Alley, the Tontine played a crucial role in facilitating travel during that era. Sadly, this architectural masterpiece met its demise in 1851 when it was demolished to make way for the Old Norfolk Market Hall. However, thanks to an original photo preserved by Sheffield Libraries (y01386), we can still marvel at the splendor that once graced Haymarket
