Co-op store showing a sales receipt transfer system, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 1955
Co-op store showing a sales receipt transfer system, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 1955. The Fancy good department at the Barnsley Co-op in 1955 prior to its refurbishment. A variety of porcelain and kitchenware can be seen on display but of more interest is the corded system of transferring sales receipts, which can be seen above the shop floor. The system (in this case a Dart Exchange) would transfer the sales receipt to a central point to be recorded and then back again to the customer. Some of these units would be replaced by a compressed air system before being phased out in the late 1960s and early 1970s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the interior of a Co-op store in Barnsley, South Yorkshire in 1955. The Fancy goods department is on display, showcasing an array of porcelain and kitchenware. However, what truly stands out is the innovative sales receipt transfer system suspended above the shop floor. This particular system, known as a Dart Exchange, was used to transport sales receipts from customers to a central point for recording before returning them back to the customer. During this time period, these corded systems were commonly used in retail stores like this Co-op branch. Eventually, they would be replaced by more advanced compressed air systems that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The photograph offers a glimpse into mid-20th century shopping practices and highlights the importance placed on efficient record-keeping within retail establishments. It also reflects the influence of the co-operative movement during this era. Captured by Michael Walters of Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this image serves as a historical document showcasing not only an English town's commercial landscape but also its social and industrial development during that time period.
