History of the Zouaves in Africa, in the Crimea and in Italy, (19th century)

History of the Zouaves in Africa, in the Crimea and in Italy, (19th century). In the summer of 1830 a number of Zouaoua tendered their services to the French colonial army, and in October of that year were organized into two battalions of auxiliaries. Over the following decade these Zouaves - as the French styled them - proved their valour in dozens of bloody desert encounters under the command of the intrepid General La Moriciere. Although the Zouave units were increasingly comprised of native Frenchmen, their distinctive uniform remained a derivation of traditional North African dress: a short, collarless jacket; a sleeveless vest (gilet); voluminous trousers (serouel); 12-foot long woollen sash (ceinture); white canvas leggings (guetres); leather greaves (jambieres); and of course the tasseled fez (chechia) and turban (cheche)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the rich history of the Zouaves in Africa, the Crimea, and Italy during the 19th century. Originating from a group called Zouaoua who offered their services to the French colonial army in 1830, they were later organized into two battalions of auxiliaries. Led by the fearless General La Moriciere, these brave soldiers showcased their valor in numerous desert battles. Despite an increasing number of native Frenchmen joining their ranks, the Zouave units maintained their unique uniform inspired by traditional North African attire. Their distinct ensemble included a short collarless jacket, sleeveless vest (gilet), voluminous trousers (serouel), a 12-foot long woollen sash (ceinture), white canvas leggings (guetres), as well as leather greaves (jambieres). Of course, no Zouave outfit would be complete without their iconic tasseled fez (chechia) and turban (cheche). The image captures not only the military aspect but also showcases elements such as fashion and animals. The presence of cows adds an interesting touch to this historical scene. It serves as a reminder that war affects not only humans but also innocent creatures caught in its path. Created by Anon with Napoleon Bonaparte I featured prominently on it, this print is a testament to both artistic expression and historical documentation. It offers viewers a glimpse into an era when expeditions were undertaken across continents like Africa and conflicts raged throughout Europe.
