Virgin and Child with Saints, c. 1230s. Creator: Berlinghiero (Italian, bef 1242)
Virgin and Child with Saints, c. 1230s. This small altarpiece, intended for a domestic interior or private chapel, consists of three panels, allowing it to be folded and easily transported. Surrounding the Virgin and Child in the center are various saints. On the left is Saint Andrew crucified, with St. Francis and St. Paul below; on the right, Christ with the instruments of the Passion, and St. Stephen and St. Lawrence below. The long expressive lines that define the clothing and hands of the figures are typical of Byzantine painting, which spread from Constantinople to Italy in the Middle Ages. Berlinghiero is one of the earliest Italian painters known by name. He lived in Lucca, the most important artistic center in Tuscany before the rise of Siena and Florence. Berlinghiero headed a large, influential workshop that included his sons

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite altarpiece titled "Virgin and Child with Saints" created by the talented Italian artist Berlinghiero in the 1230s. Originally designed for a domestic interior or private chapel, this small triptych consists of three panels that can be conveniently folded and transported. At its heart, we find the serene depiction of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus surrounded by an array of revered saints. On the left side, Saint Andrew is portrayed crucified, accompanied by St. Francis and St. Paul below him. On the right side, Christ is depicted alongside various instruments associated with his Passion, while St. Stephen and St. Lawrence stand beneath him. The figures' clothing and hands are defined by long expressive lines characteristic of Byzantine painting, which had a profound influence on Italian art during medieval times. Berlinghiero was one of Italy's earliest known painters whose name has been preserved through history. Residing in Lucca—an artistic hub in Tuscany before Siena and Florence rose to prominence—Berlinghiero led a significant workshop that even included his own sons as apprentices. This remarkable piece combines tempera paint with gold leaf on poplar panel—a testament to both Berlinghiero's skillful technique and devotion to religious subject matter. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this triptych tabernacle stands as a testament to Italy's rich artistic heritage from centuries past.
