EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1858 showcases the idyllic countryside of Greenhill, Norton. Lot 10 features a charming farmhouse nestled in the heart of the village, occupied by Mr William Outwin. The property boasts not only a comfortable house but also a beautiful garden and orchard, as well as essential agricultural structures such as barns, stables, cowhouses, sheds, and folds. Additionally, it includes a farm with fertile land that extends to Kirk Hill. Lot 11 comprises two adjacent plots of land situated on the south side of the turnpike road connecting Greenhill to Bradway. These parcels offer picturesque views towards Beauchief Abbey's entrance lodge. Opposite lot 11 lies lot 12—a close of land known as Briery lands—which adjoins the turnpike road. Its strategic location adds value and convenience for potential owners or farmers. Lastly, lot 13 presents four quaint cottages with accompanying gardens along the bustling turnpike road from Greenhill to Bradway. Adjacent to these dwellings is an excellent plot of divided land called Stubbing. Surveyor T. D. Jeffcock meticulously captured this snapshot using a scale ratio of three chains per inch—an impressive feat for its time! Preserved at Sheffield Local Studies Library under Sale Plans dated August 5th, 1858; this historical gem offers us an enchanting glimpse into rural life during that era in Greenhill—truly a treasure worth cherishing from Sheffield City Archives.
