This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 655, featuring the Lepidopteran species Aplota robertsonella, now known as Anarsia spartiella, also commonly referred to as the Wanstead Grey. The butterfly is depicted resting on the leaves of Andromeda polifolia, also known as bog- or wild-rosemary. The plate, which dates back to the 1820s or 1830s, was produced during the 19th century by the renowned naturalist and entomologist, John Obadiah Westwood, who was assisted by F.S.L. (Frederick Smith Leighton) in the preparation of the plates. The Aplota robertsonella, a small moth, was first described by the British entomologist, William Sharp Macleay, in 1820, and later reclassified as Anarsia spartiella by Edward Meyrick in 1897. The Wanstead Grey derives its name from its distinctive greyish coloration, which helps it blend in with its surroundings. The Andromeda polifolia, a low-growing evergreen shrub, is native to northern Europe, Asia, and North America. Its leaves, which are covered in small hairs, are often used in herbal medicine and are known for their astringent properties. The plant's small, white flowers bloom in late spring or early summer and attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies.
