EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of J.W. Crabtree, a legendary footballer of the late Victorian era. Born in 1873, Crabtree made his mark on the football scene by playing for both Burnley and Aston Villa, two of the most prominent clubs in England during the 1890s. Crabtree's football career began in the early 1890s when he joined Burnley, then playing in the Football League Second Division. His exceptional skills and determination quickly caught the attention of scouts from Aston Villa, who signed him in 1895. With Aston Villa, Crabtree became a key player, helping the team to win the Football League Championship in the 1895-96 season. Crabtree's success on the pitch did not go unnoticed by the English football authorities, and in 1896, he was selected to represent his country in an international match against Scotland. This photograph, taken during the 1890s, captures Crabtree in his prime, wearing the iconic white shorts and socks that were the standard uniform for footballers of the era. Crabtree's career was not limited to club football, and he went on to represent England in a further three international matches. His contributions to the game were significant, and he is remembered as one of the pioneering figures in English football history. This photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy as a sportsman and a footballing icon.
