EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts a South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus, also referred to as the Cape fur seal or Cape otary, and Otaria pusilla. The image was created by W.H. Lizars, based on an illustration by James Stewart, as part of Robert Hamilton's "Amphibious Carnivora," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Mammalia, in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1839. The South African fur seal is a distinctive marine mammal native to the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans along the southwestern African coast. These seals are characterized by their ear flaps, which are not present in other otariid species. They are social animals that form large colonies on rocky shores and islands, and they are known for their vocalizations, which can be heard from great distances. The South African fur seal is an important species in the marine ecosystem, and it plays a crucial role in the food chain as a top predator. They feed primarily on fish, squid, and crustaceans. The fur of these seals was once highly prized for its insulating properties, leading to extensive hunting and population declines. However, international protections have helped to stabilize their populations, and they are now considered to be of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving captures the essence of the South African fur seal, showcasing its sleek body, distinctive ear flaps, and expressive face. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any natural history collection.
