Maskelyne, a renowned British astronomer, used this instrument to measure the diameter of the sun and the moon with remarkable precision. His micrometer, which employed a vernier scale, enabled astronomers to make minute measurements with ease. To the right, Mr. Edward Troughton's micrometer is displayed.
