EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration, we are transported back in time to the Upper Triassic period, around 200-225 million years ago, in what is now Southern Germany. The scene is flat and open, with a bright day casting long shadows over the ancient landscape. Two small Coelurosaur dinosaurs, specifically Procompsognathus, roam the area in the foreground. These dinosaurs, characterized by their bird-like hips and small size, were likely agile and quick, making them efficient hunters. In the background, two towering Prosauropod dinosaurs, Plateosaurus, graze peacefully. These herbivorous dinosaurs, identified by their long necks and four pillar-like legs, were among the first dinosaurs to develop this body plan, allowing them to reach vegetation high up in the trees. This scene provides a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of the Upper Triassic period in Europe. The Coelurosauria, a group of theropod dinosaurs that includes modern birds, were an important part of the dinosaur ecosystem. The Ceratosauria, a subgroup of Coelurosauria, is represented by the Procompsognathus, while the Plateosaurus is an example of the Diplodocoidea, a group of prosauropods. This illustration is a reminder of the rich history of the Archosauria, a group of reptiles that includes dinosaurs and their ancestors. The Diapsida, a larger group that includes both Archosauria and the Lepidosauria (lizards and their relatives), dominated the Mesozoic Era, a time when the Earth saw the rise and fall of the dinosaurs. The discovery of these dinosaurs in Southern Germany adds to our understanding of the biosphere during this period and highlights the importance of Europe in the study of dinosaur paleontology. This illustration brings the Upper Triassic period to life, allowing us to imagine the daytime world of these extinct creatures.
