Compo - alias actor Bill Owen swapped his scruffy clothes for a smart new suit for the official opening of a new Huddersfield menswear store today. The untidy hero of TVs Last of the Summer Wine cut a dash as he cut the tape to open Marks and Spencer store on Princess Alexandra Walk. With him were the chain store, colourful clowns, Sarah Jemmett (left) and Amanda Hallas. The star was welcomed to the opening by store manager Mr Peter Marshall. The firm has doubled the floor space available for mens fashions by transferring menswear from its New Street store to the Piazza. It has also increased its staff by 26. 22nd October 1985

In this photo print, we see the beloved actor Bill Owen, known for his role as Compo in TV's Last of the Summer Wine, embracing a new look as he attends the official opening of a menswear store in Huddersfield. Swapping his scruffy clothes for a smart new suit, Owen exudes charm and elegance as he takes center stage at the Marks and Spencer store on Princess Alexandra Walk. Accompanying him are two vibrant clowns, Sarah Jemmett and Amanda Hallas, adding an element of whimsy to the occasion. The trio is warmly welcomed by store manager Mr Peter Marshall, who acknowledges their presence with genuine delight. This grand event marks not only the opening of a new establishment but also signifies significant changes within it. By transferring menswear from its New Street location to the Piazza, Marks and Spencer has doubled its floor space dedicated to men's fashion. Additionally, they have expanded their workforce by 26 individuals. The atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation as colorful balloons float above them all. This snapshot captures a moment frozen in time - an era when entertainment was celebrated through simple pleasures like attending an opening ceremony.
