South Yorkshire County Council logo, 1974

The design was chosen from a competition organised by the County Council and open to all local people. Entries were in three age groups - under 11, 11-16 and over 16s. The competition attracted over 400 entries from all over the county. The winners in their respective sections were Miss A. Hill, Mr B. Pursehouse and Mr P. Mansell. Paul Mansell, an art student at Sheffield City Polytechnic was chosen as the overall winner. His simple but distinctive design combined the White Rose of York and the County initials. The green colour of the letters reflected the rural character of much of South Yorkshire.Image from South Yorkshire County Council 1973-1986 (Local Studies ref. PAMP 353 SQ)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic South Yorkshire County Council logo, which was adopted in 1974. The design of this emblem was the result of a thrilling competition organized by the County Council, inviting participation from local residents across all age groups. With an overwhelming response of over 400 entries pouring in from every corner of the county, it truly captured the imagination and creativity of South Yorkshire's talented individuals. The winners in each age category were Miss A. Hill, Mr B. Pursehouse, and Mr P. Mansell respectively. However, it was Paul Mansell, an art student at Sheffield City Polytechnic who emerged as the ultimate victor with his simple yet distinctive creation that ingeniously combined two significant elements - the White Rose of York and the County initials. The vibrant green hue chosen for the letters beautifully reflected South Yorkshire's rural character and added a touch of natural serenity to this remarkable logo. This image is sourced from South Yorkshire County Council archives dating back to their tenure between 1973-1986 (Local Studies ref. PAMP 353 SQ), providing us with a glimpse into our region's rich history
