EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this poignant print captured by Sheffield City Archives, we witness a solemn moment that forever etched the memory of a tragic event into the hearts of those present. The image portrays an emotional gathering in Endcliffe Park as a stone and plaque are unveiled to honor the courageous crew of the Flying Fortress known as Mi Amigo. The distinguished attendees include notable figures such as Alderman Dan O'Neill, Lord Mayor of Sheffield; Rt Rev Francis Taylor, Bishop of Sheffield; Major General John Bell, Commander of the 3rd US Air Force in Britain; and Mr B. Cruse, President of the RAF Association (RAFA) branch in Sheffield. This commemorative ceremony took place in 1969 but pays tribute to an incident that occurred on February 22nd, 1944 during World War II. Tragically crashing within Endcliffe Park itself, Mi Amigo became a symbol not only for bravery but also for the enduring bond between nations. As we gaze upon this historic photograph from Yorkshire's archives, our minds are transported back to that fateful day when heroes fell from above. Let us remember their sacrifice and pay homage to their memory through this powerful visual reminder – reminding us all never to forget those who gave everything for our freedom.
