Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club

The Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club was formed in 1820. It derived its name from the fact that the tradesmen (the little mesters ) who set up the club had Wednesday as their off day (their earliest opponents included the Thursday and Friday Clubs). Sheffield Wednesday Football Club began life as an offshoot of the cricket club and was formed following a meeting at the Adelphi Hotel on 4th September 1867 with the aim of keeping the cricketers together during the winter months. The success of the football club eventually led to it breaking away from the cricket club in 1883.Original at Sheffield City Archives: X613/3

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Sheffield City Archives showcases the historic Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club, which was established in 1820. The club owes its name to the tradesmen known as "the little mesters" who initiated it, as they had Wednesdays off work. Interestingly, their earliest opponents included the Thursday and Friday Clubs, highlighting the unique scheduling of matches during that time. The photograph also sheds light on an intriguing aspect of Sheffield's sporting history: the birth of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Originally formed as a means to keep cricketers together during winter months, this football club emerged from a meeting held at the Adelphi Hotel on September 4th, 1867. As time went by, the football team flourished and eventually separated from its cricket counterpart in 1883 due to its remarkable success. Preserved within this image is a snapshot of camaraderie and teamwork among members of both clubs. It serves as a testament to their dedication and passion for sports in an era when leisure activities were limited but cherished immensely. Sheffield City Archives proudly preserves this original piece (X613/3), capturing not just a moment frozen in time but also preserving an important chapter in Sheffield's sporting heritage
