Boat New York City Ocean Liner Port Ship Transatlantic Transport Cunard Line Passenger Liner Rms Lusitania Sank Tugs

EDITORS COMMENTS
RMS Lusitania, a symbol of transatlantic luxury and connection, arrives in New York City on March 6th, 1914. This historic print captures the grandeur of the British ocean liner as it docks in America's bustling port. On this particular voyage, the ship carries an unexpected cargo: players from the renowned 1913-1914 World baseball tour. Amidst a backdrop of tugs and eager spectators, the Lusitania stands tall, representing a bygone era of opulence and international travel. Operated by the esteemed Cunard Line, she had faithfully sailed between Liverpool and New York since September 1907. However, tragedy would soon befall this majestic vessel. Just over a year after this photograph was taken, on May 7th, 1915, during World War I, the Lusitania was mercilessly torpedoed by a German U-boat off Ireland's south-east coast. In just eighteen minutes, she sank into icy depths with devastating consequences - claiming the lives of 1,198 out of the total 1,959 people aboard. This poignant image serves as both a testament to human achievement and an enduring reminder of our vulnerability at sea. It encapsulates not only history but also our shared fascination with exploration and adventure across continents. Preserved within monochrome tones that evoke nostalgia for times past; this print is an invaluable piece from Library of Congress/Science Photo Library's collection -
