Originally known as the South Yorkshire Asylum, this institution played a significant role in the region's mental health history. In 1890, it underwent a name change and became known as the West Riding Asylum, Wadsley. The asylum continued to provide care and support to patients until 1930 when it was renamed once again, this time becoming Wadsley Mental Hospital.
