EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Alexander Theatre in Sheffield takes us back to a remarkable evening of entertainment in 1876. The playbill proudly announces the appearance of the renowned Mrs Langtry, supported by her own hand-picked company. As the clock strikes 7:30, the curtains rise for an uproarious farce, followed by Goldsmith's timeless comedy "She Stoops to Conquer" at 8 o'clock. The cast includes esteemed actors such as Arthur Montfort, M. R. Selten, and W. H. Denny, who bring their talent and charisma to breathe life into these beloved characters. Among them is none other than Mrs Langtry herself, portraying Miss Hardcastle with grace and charm. As days pass and anticipation builds within Sheffield's theater enthusiasts, Saturday July 15th promises a delightful matinee performance of "She Stoops to Conquer" where Mrs Langtry shines once again as Miss Hardcastle. But this theatrical extravaganza doesn't end there; on Monday July 17th, Mr. Hy. Loraine takes center stage as an eminent Tragedian, captivating audiences with his powerful performances. With doors opening promptly at seven-thirty each night and ticket prices ranging from five shillings for center boxes to sixpence for gallery seats, this enchanting experience was accessible to all who sought respite from their daily lives through artistry. Printed by W. Brittlebank using steam power technology—an innovation of its time—this playbill has been preserved meticulously in Sheffield Libraries' archives (y13113). It serves as a testament not only to the rich history of theater but also as a reminder that even after centuries have passed since that summer evening in Sheffield's Alexander Theatre when Mrs Langtry graced its stage—we can still feel its magic today.
