EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Sheffield City Battalion during their time in Egypt in 1916. Amongst the brave soldiers, Richard Arthur Sparling can be seen standing on the extreme right, his helmet marked with a cross. Serving as a sergeant and Orderly Room clerk in the 12th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment (Sheffield City Battalion), Sparling played an integral role in World War One. Before joining the war effort at the age of 24 in September 1914, Sparling resided at 35 Pickering Road, Sheffield with his widowed mother Annie, brother George, sister-in-law Mary Ellen, and young niece Marjorie. A talented sports and pastimes reporter by profession, he was known for his work as a sports writer/journalist for a local newspaper. Following his service overseas, Sparling married Millie Archer while on leave from Active Service in August 1915. The couple went on to have two daughters named Joan and Marie. In civilian life, he became the esteemed sports editor of Sheffield Daily Telegraph. Preserved within Sheffield Libraries' archives (arc00327), this historic photograph not only showcases these courageous soldiers but also offers us a glimpse into Richard Arthur Sparling's remarkable journey through war and love.
