Children Education Fulwood Group Lane Photographs Primary School Schools Special Whiteley Wood
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Sheffield City Archives showcases the Whiteley Wood Open Air School, located on Cottage Lane, in approximately 1910. The school was established by Sheffield City Council in 1909 with a noble purpose - to provide specialized education and care for children aged 10 and above who suffered from anaemia, tuberculosis, and general debility. Originally housed in the building of the closed Whiteley Wood School, this unique institution later relocated to its facilities on Cottage Lane. The open-air concept of the school aimed to improve the health and well-being of its students through exposure to fresh air and natural surroundings. In this particular image, we see a group of girls gathered together outside one of the cottages that formed part of their educational environment. Their youthful faces radiate innocence as they pose for what must have been an important moment captured by a photographer. Although time has passed since this photograph was taken, it serves as a poignant reminder of an era when special education for children faced with health challenges was still in its infancy. Today, we can appreciate how far we've come in providing inclusive learning environments for all children while acknowledging the pioneering efforts made by institutions like Whiteley Wood Open Air School. The original print is now preserved at Sheffield City Archives under reference MD7503/1/2/4 – a testament to our shared history and commitment to preserving memories that shaped our society.
