EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a brass button from the 9th Regiment of Bengal Lancers, dating back to pre-1901. The button was skillfully crafted by Harman and Company in Calcutta, featuring crossed lances, unit initials (A BLA), and an elegant crown on top. The 9th Bengal Lancers have a rich history that traces its origins to Hodson's Horse, an irregular cavalry unit established by Brevet Major William Hodson during the Indian Mutiny. Over time, the regiment evolved into one of three regiments formed from Hodson's Horse - the 9th Bengal Cavalry. In 1885, the regiment transitioned to using lances as their primary weapon and went on to serve in significant campaigns such as the Sudan campaign (1885-1886) and on the North West Frontier between 1895 and 1898. During World War One, they bravely fought on both the Western Front and in Palestine. In 1921, following India's independence, the 9th Hodson's Horse merged with the 10th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers (Hodson's Horse), forming a new entity known as the 4th Duke of Cambridge’s Own Hodson’s Horse. This remarkable print is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection housed at London’s National Army Museum. It serves as a testament to not only this distinguished regiment but also India’s proud military heritage.
