EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a gilt button from the 9th Regiment of Bengal Lancers, dating back to the pre-1901 era. The button, crafted by Harman and Company in Calcutta, features an exquisite design with crossed lances, unit initials (A BLA), and a crown adorning its top. The 9th Bengal Lancers can trace their origins to Hodson's Horse, an irregular cavalry unit established by Brevet Major William Hodson during the Indian Mutiny in the late 19th century. As one of three regiments formed from Hodson's Horse, the 9th Bengal Cavalry transitioned to using lances in 1885. They played significant roles in various military campaigns such as the Sudan campaign (1885-1886) and on the North West Frontier between 1895 and 1898. During World War One, this distinguished regiment served valiantly on both the Western Front and in Palestine. In 1921, they merged with the 10th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers (Hodson's Horse), forming what would become known as the 4th Duke of Cambridge's Own Hodson's Horse a year later. Following India’s independence, this esteemed regiment retained its founder’s name as part of India’s armored force – now known as post-independence India’s armoured force. Preserved within Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection at London’s National Army Museum, this remarkable print offers us a glimpse into history – capturing not only an intricate piece of military insignia but also commemorating the legacy of bravery and service embodied by Button and his fellow soldiers from the illustrious Bengal Lancers.
