The event took place at the Woodford House School field and was organized by the Quex Park VAD Hospital and its Annexe at St. Michaels. The patients of the hospital, who were recovering from injuries sustained during World War I, enthusiastically participated in this fun competition to raise funds for the Birchington War Depot. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, which opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919, was run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park. Major Powell-Cotton, who was also the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, played a crucial role in organizing the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals.
