William Smithson Broadhead (1888 - 1960) worked as an artist and illustrator, notably for the Cosmopolitan magazine and Good Housekeeping and later became a famous horse painter. Much of his work was done in Canada and the USA.After studying at the Sheffield School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, William Smithson Broadhead sailed to Canada as a young artist in January 1910, and from there went to New York, where he became a staff illustrator for the magazine Judge.He served in the First World War (in a cavalry regiment, the King Edwards Horse, which was part of the Kings Overseas Regiment and was mobilised in London in 1914). Broadhead was wounded in France and invalided home. He resigned from his regiment in 1920.Original at Sheffield Archives LD1980/41
