Flags of the Allies drawn by a wounded soldier (Belgium, UK, France)

Image from autograph book of Edith Eveline Bromhead of London Road, Sheffield, compiled whilst working in a military hospital in Sheffield during World War One (original at Sheffield Archives ref. X605/1).Edith was born in the Ecclesall registration district in 1898. Her early years were spent at 136 Myrtle Road, Sheffield; she attended Heeley Bank Girls School from c. 1906. In 1911 she is recorded as living, aged 13, with her parents William Alfred and Elizabeth Bromehead at 356 London Road, Sheffield. William was listed as a boot repairer and maker.By the time World War One broke out in August 1914 Edith would have been 16 or 17 years old. Whilst she was working as a nurse she kept an album in which her fellow nurses and wounded soldiers wrote notes of friendship and affection. In addition, some of the soldiers drew pictures and cartoons of the war and other matters.Edith married Frank Kerrigan in 1925. It is believed they lived at 49 Melrose Place in Sheffield for most, if not all of their married life. It appears Edith died in March 1972 and Frank a few months later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art created by a wounded soldier during World War One. The image depicts the Flags of the Allies, beautifully drawn with precision and skill. Representing Belgium, UK, and France, these flags symbolize unity and solidarity among nations in their fight against adversity. The original autograph book belonged to Edith Eveline Bromhead, who worked tirelessly as a nurse in a military hospital in Sheffield during the war. Born in 1898, Edith's early years were spent on Myrtle Road before moving to London Road with her parents. Her dedication to serving others is evident through this album she kept, filled with heartfelt notes from fellow nurses and soldiers expressing friendship and affection. In addition to written messages, some soldiers used their artistic talents to create drawings and cartoons depicting various aspects of the war. This particular drawing stands out for its intricate details and vibrant colors. After marrying Frank Kerrigan in 1925, Edith settled down at Melrose Place in Sheffield where they likely spent most of their married life together. Sadly, Edith passed away in March 1972 followed shortly by Frank. This print not only serves as a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who fought during World War One but also honors the memory of individuals like Edith Eveline Bromhead who selflessly dedicated themselves to caring for others during such challenging times.
